The seven-member investment team is led by Catherine Nicholas, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer. The portfolio managers share the same investment philosophy and passion for institutional investing. True to our heritage in identifying and capturing positive change, Nicholas Investment Partners offers micro cap, small cap and growth equity strategies in addition to long/short equity hedge and convertible arbitrage. According to CIO Catherine Nicholas, “Our active equity and alternative strategies combine the insights of traditional fundamental research and a well developed research network with the discipline and rigor of quantitative analytics. Catherine Nicholas,
Managing Partner & Chief Investment Officer
Catherine Nicholas is Managing Partner Chief Investment Officer and founder of Nicholas Investment Partners. She previously served as the Global Chief Investment Officer of Nicholas-Applegate until the firm’s sale to Allianz in 2000. While at Nicholas-Applegate, Catherine led the firm’s Global Equity teams and was the architect of its Global Equity, Global Select, Global Small Cap, Global Healthcare and Global Tech portfolio management strategies. As CIO, Catherine applied quantitative tools and techniques to assist with the firm’s fundamental stock research. After the sale, Catherine served on the Nicholas-Applegate Executive Committee and the Allianz Dresdner Asset Management US Equity Committee.
Before assuming the position of Global Chief Investment Officer in 1997, Catherine served six years as Lead Portfolio Manager of all US Equities. While in this role, she continued to apply the firm’s philosophy and proven approach to inefficient areas of the US market and expanded its application to the developed and emerging markets. After joining Nicholas-Applegate as an analyst in 1987, Catherine became the Lead Portfolio Manager of US Small and Mini Cap Growth products until 1991.Previously, Catherine was Vice President at Professional Asset Securities, where she focused on analyzing financial institutions, and served as a research analyst at Pacific Century Advisors.
Catherine has 22 years of investment experience. She earned her B.S. in Business Administration, cum laude, and her M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Southern California. She currently serves on the advisory board of USC’s Marshall School of Business and as a trustee and Chair of the Investment Committee of the Francis Parker School.

John Wylie,
Partner/Portfolio Manager
John Wylie is responsible for portfolio management and research. Prior to joining Nicholas Investment Partners in 2007, John was co-founder and Co-Chief Investment Officer of CapitalWorks Investment Partners where he was the lead portfolio manager for Convertible Arbitrage and Micro Cap strategies. Previously, John was President of Nicholas-Applegate Mutual Funds and Chief Investment Officer of their Investor Services Group. Prior to 1997, he was the Lead Portfolio Manager of the Growth & Income team and was directly involved in the management of fixed income, convertible, balanced and convertible arbitrage portfolios.
Before joining Nicholas-Applegate in 1987, he worked with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for six years. John earned his B.A. in American Studies, cum laude, from Amherst College. He currently serves as a trustee and chair of the investment committee for the San Diego Foundation.

Arthur Nicholas,
Senior Partner
Art Nicholas is Senior Partner and co-founder of Nicholas Investment Partners. Previously, he co-founded Nicholas-Applegate in 1984, and served as Chairman and CEO until the firm’s sale to Allianz in 2000. Art took the firm to over $50 billion in assets prior to the sale. An innovator throughout his career, Art applied his early discovery/change at the margin investment philosophy to establish many asset classes now common today, such as Micro Cap, Mid Cap and Global. He successfully extended his philosophy to the high yield, convertible and non-US markets. Among his contributions to investment disciplines, Art systematized the process of using dynamic quantitative models to deliver value-added performance. After the firm’s sale, Art served on the Nicholas-Applegate Executive Committee and was a member of the Allianz Dresdner Asset Management Executive Committee.
Before founding Nicholas-Applegate, Art was Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer at Pacific Century Advisors, an investment subsidiary of Security Pacific Corporation. While at Security Pacific, Art ran the top performing fund in the nation in 1982 (Institutional Investor, March 1983). In addition, he was First Vice President and Manager of the institutional accounts division at Security Pacific Bank, and Vice President and Senior Portfolio Manager at San Diego Trust & Savings Bank. Art is a former Director of Value Line, Inc. He currently serves on the board of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
Art has 35 years of investment experience. He earned his B.S. in Finance from San Diego State University.

Jamie Atwell,
Partner/ Head Trader
Jamie Atwell is responsible for working with the investment team on idea generation and day-to-day trading. Jamie has 16 years of experience trading equities across global markets.
Prior to joining Nicholas Investment Partners in 2006, Jamie was Head of Trading for American Express Growth Spectrum. Before American Express, he was a Partner and Head of Global Equity Trading for Nicholas-Applegate, where he also worked closely with portfolio managers on idea generation. He joined Nicholas-Applegate in 1997 after five years of equity trading experience with AIM/INVESCO where he was head of OTC Trading. Jamie holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of Houston.

Robert Welborn,
Quantitative Research and Risk Analyst
Robert Welborn manages quantitative research and is responsible for modeling, optimizing and portfolio risk management. He works with the investment team to generate investment ideas, construct portfolios, analyze risk and performance in support for the team’s fundamental research. Robert was most recently an analytics consultant for Cerberus Capital Management. An engineer by training, Robert worked 10 years with Perot Systems Corporation as a Strategy Consultant in the Private Equity and Due Diligence practices. Robert earned his B.S. from the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University and his M.B.A. from the Rady School of Management, UC San Diego.

Avik Mukhopadhyay,
Analyst
Avik Mukhopadhyay supports the investment team’s fundamental research. He recently completed his M.B.A. at the Stanford Graduate School of Management. An experienced financial analyst, Avik worked in Corporate Treasury and Real Estate Private Equity at Goldman Sachs. Avik earned his B.S.E. cum laude in Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton University.

Alex Reison ,
Analyst
Alex Reison works with the investment team to research investment ideas and provide trading support. In addition, Alex also prepares and analyzes risk measurement and attribution. He earned his B.A. in Economics, cum laude, with certificates in Finance and Political Economy from Princeton University.
